Where to find Healthier Food

Since starting the Fast Metabolism Diet, I've had to buy a lot of specialty food items. Buying organic, gluten free, dairy free, and sugar free products can actually be very difficult. The diet banned items that I didn't even know I would miss. Things like catsup or BBQ sauce were suddenly forbidden. Buying substitutes for products I would normally use wasn't as easy as I had expected it to be. I decided to compile a list of stores where you can buy specialty food products. If you want to change to a paleo or vegan-style diet, these stores will become very familiar.

1. Whole Foods

Whole Foods is probably my favorite store. They have tons of healthy options for you. The Fast Metabolism diet only allows you to use sprouted wheat products. I found sprouted wheat bread in the freezer section at Walmart no problem, but I wanted sprouted wheat tortillas. I love hispanic food, so I needed some type of tortilla to make burritos or quesadillas with. Whole Foods was the only place that had these tortillas. I also found catsup and BBQ sauce that were sweetened with agave nectar, rather than cane sugar. Score! Whole Foods was also the only store that had almond cheese in stock. Since the diet is dairy free, a cheese substitute was desperately needed. Definitely look here for those rarer products you can't seem to find anywhere else.

2. The Fresh Market

The Fresh Market is another great store for healthier food. They have a lot of organic produce and a large selection of fresh meats. I mostly rely on this store for healthy snacks. In phase three of the diet, you have to snack on some type of healthy fat and vegetables. I found sweet potato chips that are the perfect snack. The only ingredients were: sweet potatoes, coconut oil and seat salt. I love when I buy food with a short list of ingredients. I don't see any outrageous chemical names or strange additives. This store can be a little expensive when it comes to fruits and veggies. The same goes for the meat department, but they usually have great sales. If you catch something you want on sale, it's definitely worth getting.

3. Publix

Full disclosure, I don't have a Publix near me. I wanted to include this store on my list because my brother uses it a lot, especially when he's on the Fast Metabolism Diet. He always finds what he needs here. If you have one in your area, definitely try it out. I can't really say much abut it, but my brother sure loves this store. I also know that Carrie Underwood frequently shops the local Publix in her area. With her body, I'm sure she eats pretty healthy.

4. Target

Surprisingly, Target has a lot to offer in the food department. My friend in college swears by their grocery section. I have noticed that target has a few more organic, natural brands that you wouldn't see at Walmart. They sometimes have more products from a particular healthy brand you have seen as well. I'm sure if you need something simple that Target will have it. They also have really good sales. If you don't have the Cartwheel app on your phone, shame on you! Cartwheel is an app that Target released to give out more discounts. You save and select different discounts that interest you and add them to a single barcode. At checkout, all you have to do is let the cashier scan your barcode and all the discounts are applied at once. It's a wonderful thing to have.

5. Harris Teeter

I don't usually shop here while I'm at home, but I love to go here when I'm at school. Harris Teeter has a great selection of healthier options. Fruit and veggies are usually quite fresh here and they have a wide range of products in each section of the store. If you get a Harris Teeter store card, you can save a ton of money. They have awesome sales for their card members.

I hope that this list will help you shop the right places and find the food you want. I love eating healthy, but it is difficult to find everything I need to satisfy old cravings. The biggest downfall to any of these stores and healthy eating in general is the cost. Healthier food always costs more. It's unavoidable. But it will be worth it, I promise. I have never felt better. My stomach is never bloated and I have so much energy without any caffeine. Cleansing yourself of the toxins from processed foods and refined sugars can make a huge difference. Eating healthy, clean food will change your life, if you let it.
