Smartphones: The Cure for Boredom
Have you noticed that since smartphones were introduced that people can get through boring situations much easier? With our smartphones always available and ready to entertain, we can tackle certain tasks that would have been a nightmare before. I'll go through a few situations that used to be torture and explain how we use our constant connection to the internet to cure our boredom.
Waiting on car maintenance at the dealership used to be horrific. You had to read every newspaper, magazine, and then what? You were out of options. If you didn't have someone to pick you up and bring you back later, your only option was to sit there and wait. Now, with our smartphones, we can find more to read, keep up with our business tasks and entertain ourselves for hours. It's a miracle to have something that can save us from boredom so easily.
Perhaps you've had to sit in a doctor's office for an ungodly amount of time. It's clear that you won't be called back anytime soon. This could be terrible for the phone-less adult who stares at the wall and waits his turn. Even worse, if you bring a child to the doctor they will likely exhibit some extreme boredom within the first 10 minutes of waiting. They quickly go through the worthless children's toys and are losing interest fast. But hey, you have an iPad full of endless games and TV shows for that child! Now, with them distracted you can continue to read the news on your smartphone and keep up to date with your favorite sports teams. A terrible waiting room experience has now been turned into a stress-free doctor's visit. Maybe you even got a sweet high score in your favorite game; putting you on the leaderboard for the day. Awesome!
Have you ever been on a plane without a smartphone or computer? Now, planes have wi-fi allowing you to access the internet, even while being 30,000 feet in the air. If you don't want to pay for the wi-fi, you can pre-download your favorite games, songs, shows and movies for the trip. Before smartphones, you could read a magazine or two and then go to sleep. That was your best options for passing the time while traveling. Now with smartphones, we have plenty to do on a long layover or a long flight.
Thanks to smartphones, we can say goodbye to boring times. Waiting rooms are no longer dull and traveling long distances won't drive us crazy. Our smartphones have given us a never-ending cycle of fun and excitement. Perhaps that's why current generations are obsessed with being entertained all the time. Without our smartphones, it's obvious that life would be much more boring.
